The Devil and Tom Walker

Tom Walker and his wife had an odd relationship. He is a greedy and selfish miser of a man that cherishes money more than his wife. They lived in a tarnished looking house, that stood alone. Then one day he decides to take a short cut through the swamp at an old Indian fortress. As he took a break from his walk home he started a conversation with the devil. He was known as Scratch in the story. Scratch was the man in the swamp cutting down all the trees. He was there to protect the treasure of Captain Kidd until the he returned but he never did because he died. So Scratch decides to make a deal with Tom for the treasure in the swamp. The only thing wrong with this deal is that Tom had to give Scratch his soul. Using his brain for a moment Tom said he would come back with his answer and went home. Tom's wife actually took all their valuable belongings to the swamp to give to Scratch. Once Tom noticed that their stuff was gone he returned to the swamp to find his wife's heart and liver tied up in her apron. So Tom decided to give his soul to the Devil and was in away happy about his wife's death.

  1. I am sorry, Shae but I did not want a summary of the story. I asked that you pick one character and tell me what type of person they were based on the information given by the author. I asked you to then tell me whether the author used direct or indirect characterization to make you come to that conclusion.
